It’s National Plan For Vacation Day!

Nowadays, there are all sorts of national days. We just celebrated National Popcorn Day on January 19th and while I’m not a huge popcorn fan, I’m stoked that Project Time Off has declared January 31st as National Plan For Vacation Day!

Did you know that 55% of Americans will not use their vacation days every year? This is estimated to about 658 million wasted / unused vacation days.

Here’s a breakdown of the stats:

According to research from Project: Time Off, the top barriers for employees include:

  • Concern over returning to a mountain of work, 37%
  • Feeling that no one else can do the job, 30%
  • Impression that taking time off is harder as you grow in the company, 28%
  • Wanting to show complete dedication, 22%

Are you a victim of the statistics?

Here’s what you should know.

You are given vacation days for a reason. Rule #1: You earned it. You should take it.

In my 2017 Travel Bucket List, I wrote about how I plan to maximize my 21 days vacation. The secret sauce to the recipe is really planning.

  • Get familiar with your jobs’ vacation policy and list your days earned - write it down.
  • Start dreaming about the places you’d like to visit this year -  write it down.
  • If you can’t afford to travel international, travel local. There are places in your city waiting to be startled by your entry.
  • Share your vacation days with your manager and your team.

If you plan nothing else this year, make sure you plan for vacation.

Work hard. Play hard.

Happy National Plan For Vacation Day!
